Outdoor Learning and Forest School

Outdoor learning

Outdoor learning plays a vital role in supporting children’s academic, physical, and emotional development. Learning beyond the classroom helps pupils build confidence, resilience, and curiosity while strengthening their connection to the natural world. Outdoor experiences encourage teamwork, problem-solving, creativity, and wellbeing, making learning meaningful and memorable.

As a Teach Outdoors School, we are committed to using our outdoor spaces regularly and purposefully across the curriculum. By taking learning outside, we inspire pupils to engage actively, develop essential life skills, and foster a lifelong respect for nature, supporting happy, healthy learners who are ready to thrive.

Forest School

At Woodlands Primary, we believe that some of the most powerful learning happens beyond the classroom walls. That’s why we’re proud to introduce our Forest School sessions — held right here in our very own Environment Garden. The sessions will be led by myself (Miss Walsh) a level 3 qualified forest school practitioner and trained support staff in outdoor learning.

Forest School is more than just outdoor play — it’s a unique, child-centred approach to learning that encourages curiosity, independence, resilience, and a deep connection to the natural world. Within the safe, inspiring space of our Environment Garden, children explore, create, problem-solve, and grow — both as learners and as individuals.

Whether it’s building dens, discovering mini-beasts, using tools safely, or sitting quietly around a campfire, every session supports children’s physical, emotional, and social development in meaningful and lasting ways. At Woodlands Primary, Forest School is a chance for children to slow down, tune in to nature, and truly engage with the world around them. It’s learning that is muddy, joyful, and unforgettable — just as it should be. Come and see the magic of the outdoors at work. Nature is the best teacher, and our Environment Garden is full of lessons waiting to be discovered.
